Simple machines

Interest Level: Ages 12-15

What is “mechanical advantage,” and how does a lever provide it? What are the basic mechanisms underlying all the machinery we encounter in our technological culture? How is it that machines enable people to do things that are not possible without them? Students find out in this hands-on course. They test the effects of mass, inertia and friction, and investigate three types of levers, winches, block and tackle, ramps, wedges and screws. They learn the difference between work and force and how to use simple machines to change force and do work more effectively.

Includes step-by-step Learning Guide and Materials List.
